Padrón Cigars

History/Origins

padron cigarDámaso Padrón (José Orlando, the founder’s father) left the Canary Islands as a young man to Cuba in the 1800s.

He, too, was a tobacco farmer. José Orlando was born in 1926 – this was the inspiration for the 1926 cigar.

The company was founded in 1964, but it was known as Piloto cigars and not Padróns; this was after José Orlando had just emigrated to the United States.

It was later moved to Nicaragua, Estelí precisely. This was during the Sandinista revolution in 1970.

Padrón made up to 200 cigars a day at that time, all by hand, of course, while making use of the Cuban cigar rolling style. He refused to change location, despite the conditions surrounding him.

He was quoted saying that concerning Cigar tobacco, Nicaragua was the “Second coming of Cuba.” So, he stayed in Nicaragua, farming its tobacco. Padron launched a factory in 2003 that was a lot bigger than the previous one.

Even with the political unrest and trouble, José Orlando never left cigars. Instead, he continued to work hard at it. At some point, he could determine the quality of the tobacco leaves by taking a long whiff of it before approving it.

The result of his handwork and diligence is what we see and enjoy today.

Where are they made today

Padróns had encountered some problems in the past with the Sandinistas, and after fixing issues with them and coming to a concord. The United States put an embargo on Nicaragua and all Nicaraguan products.

This forced Padróns to decide to leave Nicaragua for Tampa, Florida, taking as much tobacco and cigars they could carry within the five days grace period given before the embargo begun.

The US government later gave him six more months to continue transporting his products, tobacco, and whatever stockpile he had left in Nicaragua. Anything else was left after those six months.

After the embargo was lifted, Padrón took the bulk of its operation back to Nicaragua, while the Headquarters remained in Florida.
