The Romeo y Julieta brand was established by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia in 1875. The brand got its name from the famous Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The brand was nominated for several awards at various cigar tasting exhibitions between 1885 and 1900.
Romeo y Julieta won some of the awards, and till today, the evidence is represented with gold medals on the brand’s logo. After the Cabañas firm’s former head in Havana, José “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernández, acquired the brand, it became more popular, and it truly bloomed. Rodriguez actively promoted his brand across Europe and America through his constant travels.
His good salesmanship earned his exceptional brand popularity among wealthy cigar lovers worldwide, who placed orders for personally branded cigars. At the peak of producing personalized cigars, the brand created about 2000 customized cigars for patrons. One of the brand’s most famous barons, Sir Winston Churchill, has a cigar in his name.
The Churchill cigar, a flagship vilota, is about 7″ long, and it has a ring gauge of about 47. Rodriguez died in 1954, at 88 years of age. Around the same time, Cuba’s tobacco industry’s nationalization and revolution caused the brand to relocate to La Romana in the Dominican Republic.
